Books, movies, and other totally normal human things

Day 1 of 31 days of horror: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

I watched this movie years ago because I’d read that it was inspired by the story of serial killer Ed Gein. At the time, I found it to be pretty boring and I think I may have watched it once more since then. After reading a book that has been compared to this movie, I decided it’s time to give it another shot. I mean thematically it is very similar to a lot of the books I like to read these days. Fucked up people doing fucked up things to other people and then eating them.

This time around I found it way more entertaining. But I feel like the sound levels could have been fixed sometime in the last almost 50 years. Most of the movie is quiet mumbling with no background noise and then suddenly CHAINSAW and screaming.

Random thoughts that crossed my mind while watching: People really just picked up randos on the side of the road. Accessibility just wasn’t a thing. Franklin isn’t gonna have a good time. Boy I would have planted a hammer in your head too if you let yourself in my house like that. Leatherface sure can run for a big boy wielding a chainsaw. Imagine calling your mentally challenged brother Leatherface. I see the Gein inspiration in the decor. Grandpa scene = creepy af. The whole dinner table scene is bizarre and honestly pretty funny. I don’t think Grandpa is really up for killing anymore. That shit hurts, doesn’t it Leatherface.

Closing thoughts: This isn’t a review. None of my movie posts will be reviews. This is more of a watch this movie with me type thing. Anyway, I liked it better this time around. Probably won’t add it to my regular rotation, but I don’t feel like I wasted an hour and a half that could have been spent watching Star Trek. I declare Day 1 not a disappointment.
