A friend of mine tagged me in a Facebook post today suggesting I might be interested in this movie. She was right, of course. We’ve known each other a long time, and though our communication these days is mostly comments on social media, we’ve watched each other evolve from weird kids to adults to feral 40+ year old women who have retained their uniqueness of youth without the self consciousness that accompanied it. All this to say that I am absolutely interested and I decided to watch it immediately. This wasn’t on any of the many streaming services that I pay for, so I started a free trial of Kino Film Collection. Time to grab some snacks and hunker down.
I love the black and white film aesthetic. It starts with an average sized man toting a ginormous cat down the road in an obviously uncomfortable one arm hold. Interesting angles. Whoa. Ditch full of bodies. Subtitles. I’ll have to pay attention. You be nice to that kitty, Mr drug dealer. Don’t be stupid. Oh you’re also a pimp, huh. Ooo spooky. She does not look impressed by your coke fueled seduction dance. About to have some fun, are we. Oh nice. Yessss. Bite more things off! The score is so good. Got a little something on your mouth. Yessss take your car and run. Take his cash too. Fuck that guy. I love how there’s literally no other people around except for the cast. I love how the vampire is beautiful without being overtly sexual. She sure scared the crap out of that little boy. Come on, Pops. You’re not sick, you’re in withdrawal. Dude is gonna get robbed or worse. He has no idea what he’s getting himself into. Yeah, ask the vampire for directions. She seems almost amused by him. Ok that’s cute. He’s so high he can’t walk anymore so she pushes him on the skateboard the little boy left behind. Not sure what this balloon dance scene is about, but it’s a nice interlude. Yeah seriously. Pierce those ears. I’ve had my share of safety pin ear piercings. Do it, bitch. I love all the random cat shots. This cat is part of the cast. This won’t be good. I wonder if vampires can get high from their victim’s blood. She seems okay. What’s the matter, dude. Didn’t expect your junkie father to die on the street? You sent him out there with the cat and a fistful of dope and cash. That’s right, your girl has your dad’s cat. What now. She told you she’s done bad things. She told you that you don’t know her. I love how the cat looks directly at the camera at all times. Guess he’s cool with it.
Closing thoughts: I really enjoyed this. It’s visually stunning with the black and white and angles and lighting. There’s very little dialogue, but it’s enough. The soundtrack and the score are fantastic. There’s a lot of subtext that I don’t feel like getting into, but I will say it is impactful.
