What do you listen to while you work?
This probably comes as a surprise to no one, but I listen to audiobooks while I work. My Audible library is huge. I borrow books on Libby all the time. I work at an academic library creating purchase orders and paying invoices for our digital resources. It is tedious work that requires focus, as any errors on my part can be costly for the university and cause delays in services for our students. It might seem counterintuitive to consume media while doing work that requires a certain degree of accuracy, but audiobooks help keep my mind focused. And sometimes I listen to audiobooks as a means of professional development (the university provides lots of relevant books for this purpose).
On the rare occasion that my job gets physical, I’m listening to music. It depends on my mood, but it’s usually grunge or metal or somewhere in between. If I take a walk, it’s Eddie Vedder or Layne Staley crooning in my ears. If I’m doing something that requires a swift pace, I’m probably listening to metal.
And if I’m writing, I’m listening to nothing because everything is too distracting. I started this post with purpose but it has since petered out because I hear a colleague’s zoom meeting and I just can’t.
If you read this (or any of my posts), I appreciate you.
